TD has been a major sponsor of the Community Cup as well as a proud supporter of the annual event since its beginning in 2005. This support has not only been financial. Over the past six years, employees with the bank have been integral as volunteers. At the 2010 Community Cup, 27 volunteers from the organization came out to lend a helping hand.

In this Q & A with Cathy Jowsey, Manager, Community Relations with TD, we discuss the connection that has developed between the bank and the Community Cup as well as the positive impact she believes the event has on those who are newcomers to our country and community.

Jason Dunkerley: How long as TD been involved with the Community Cup?

Cathy Jowsey: We became involved about six years ago, after being approached by Dan Dubeau.

JD: Can you tell me about the connection between your organization and this great event?

CJ: Dan approached us and asked if we'd like to be involved, and it was a great fit. TD and its employees are committed to making a difference in the communities where we work and live and we believe that the Community Cup does this as well.  We've had employees volunteering their time to this wonderful event for the past six years and participation of our employees has grown every year. They have a great time!  They really enjoy interacting and helping new immigrants to our community get to know Ottawa a little bit better.  Employees have also told me that it is a fun day for them to experience and learn something about many cultures and/or to connect with a fellow countryman.

JD: Have you been involved as a player in the past?

CJ: I haven't participated as a player. I've been there as a volunteer. I think the first year I helped out with the food, selling the tickets, and of course sampling the scrumptious treats from many different countries!  I've also had the honour of helping to present the annual Spirit award to the winning team. This is a special award for TD to hand out as it is awarded to the team that shows the most team spirit throughout the day.  And in my mind, the coolest thing about the Community Cup is seeing everyone come together in a common cause and to celebrate each other. It is also a testament to the organizers and the Ottawa Community on how the Community Cup has developed over the years. We get a taste of the different cultures, both from the food standpoint and from the activities that are going on, which is great for everyone involved. Each year you can see how everyone is very proud to share their culture. At TD, we believe diversity is essential to our success and that of our community.  We take great strides as an employer to be inclusive, supportive and to learn what is important to our employees and the communities we serve. I believe that this is a common theme with everyone involved with the Community Cup event.

JD: Can you talk about the way you see this event positively impacting newcomers to Canada?

CJ: What I've been told by some of the participants is that they feel very welcomed to Ottawa and it is a great opportunity to make new connections and friendships within the community.  They are also very proud to share what they're all about.  I believe that it is a great example and showcase of a community coming together. At TD, the Community Cup is an event we look forward to being a part of and something we're proud to lend our support to. We are truly honored to be included.
